Eligibility requirements: Youth ages 6-14, primarily (but not
exclusively) from single-parent homes lacking the supportive involvement of both
parents
Intake Procedure: Call or walk-in. After application is
completed, an interview is scheduled with both parent/guardian and child or
volunteer

About the program: Children ages 6-14 are matched in one-to-one
mentoring relationships with screened and trained volunteers who make a commitment
of one year to build a quality and consistent relationship, ideally through weekly
contact. The mentoring relationship is based on similarities in personality,
interests and preferences of the volunteer, child and parent. The emphasis is on
the sharing of time, opportunities and conversations. All children regardless of
their family situation can benefit from the consistent time, friendship and
attention that a Big Brother or Big Sister can provide. The match relationship that
is formed helps the child develop assets that all children need in order to grow to
be confident, competent and caring adults.
